Installing 3 Point Retractable Seat Belts On 1965-1970 Ford Mustangs And Other Classic Cars – San Diego, California

Seat belts weren’t really a saftey requirement until 1965, and they began as only lap belts. Some of them were not retractable, and the tighter you made them the safer you felt. They were not very comfortable during sudden stops, and all of the force was put on you lower body. Beginning in 1967, most manufacturers started installing non-retractable shoulder belts. They were separate from the lap belts, so you had to clip them in separately. Now you can convert you Classic Mustang, or any other Classic Automobile to a 3 Point Retractable Seat Belt System. They are more comfortable, and you do not feel like your tied to you seat.

The kits give you more than enough hardware to mount them in different configurations, and come in most factory colors with buckle options. Most installations depend on the upper torso height of the driver. The main seat belt pivot mounting location is the key factor. They can be mounted low by the rear door jamb, or on most classic vehicles can be mounted like the factory did it near the headliner. I always prefer mounting up near the headliner, but take a little longer to install. If you car already has a headliner, you have to be careful not to tear it during installation. The main pivot anchor has to be mounted under the headliner, and on a secure location such as a roof support. If your car does not have a secure location up high, then the only option is the door jamb area. They use the two factory lap belt holes, but another mounting location wil be needed for the seat belt retracter. I have installed them on 1965-1970 Mustang, and on Classic GM Automobiles as well.
