1962 Chevy Belair Bubble Top – Installing Carpet, Dynamat Extreme, And Custom Gauges – North Park, California

Last summer, I did some custom gauge work, and carpet installation on a beautiful 1962 Chevy Belair Bubble Top. Somehow, with the hundreds of pictures that I take, the picture got buried in a folder on my computer. The customer wanted his old Auto Gage aftermarket gauges replaced with more retro correct Stewart Warner gauge under the dash. Also, he was not happy with the way the carpet was installed, so he wanted it replaced with new kick panels.

The customer had purchased an “old school” underdash three hole gauge panel, and wanted Stewart Warner gauges to be fitted in it. The gauge panel was a rough aluminum sand casting that was perfect for tailoring the new gauges to. I had to carefully recess the gauge trims rings by using a Dremel tool. After the gauges were fitted, I prepped and painted the bezel. The new gauge panel went much better with the Belair’s theme

The carpet looked fairly new, but was cut too short at the edges, and the shifter hole was too large for the use of a stock shifter boot. When I pulled up the carpet, I found the Dynamat was not installed all that well either, so customer wanted Dynamat Extreme installed in its place. Dynamat has to be adhered firmly against the surface without air bubbles, and this installation had many of them. Once the new Dynamat and carpet were installed, I installed the new kick panels. Kick panels my not seem too hard to install, but they made them out of thin cardboard back then, and they can be ruined easily. I made sure there was enough carpet tucked under the kick panels, so they it not pull out like the old installation, and made sure the kick panels fit snugly up against the carpet too. That’s were carpet screws come in handy. Yes, they used screws ┬áin the carpet, but only in the areas that required a snugger fit.
